BBC HQ

Random Portraits was a project I originally started in November 2005. I really enjoyed watching Rolfs Star Portraits on tv and had never painted people before, mainly because I was frightened that I couldn't. Originally I contacted my friend Alan Morris the grey haired gentlemen pictured, Alan often posts pictures of himself pulling amusing faces on his Flickr photostream. I asked him to be the Good the Bad and the Ugly for me and sent him pictures of Eli Wallach as a reference. The photos he sent me back were brilliant and provided the basis for the first picture I painted.

How to draw a "Gordon" in 5 stages

These people were all crazy enough to send me pictures of themselves for the project. I took pictures at most stages of the painting to show them and ask for comments, they were surprisingly helpful. Here is a stage by stage of how I painted Gordon as Micheal Madsen from Reservoir Dogs.
