FREEBIES > TUTORIALS > 3D PAINT OVER

1. The initial sketch

This was a watercolour image produced for the concept artwork on the game internal affairs. I quite liked the composition but was unhappy with the perspective and the colours seemed a bit too happy so I decided to do a 3d painted version.

2. The 3d model

To help with perspective I quickly modeled up the scene using simple shapes, I slightly changed some bits and added a road with some street lamps as I though the trees would be difficult to get looking right.

3. second colour wash

From that initial render I went to work in photoshop basically adding areas of colour over the original render. The colours were picked from various photos that I had for reference of similar looking buildings. This was then blocked out until all the areas and details had colour on them.

4.Lighting the scene.

I took the original 3d scene and rather than spending time trying to add the light and dark in photoshop I relit the scene how I wanted it. I also added volumentrics to the street lamps. The large building in the background wasn't working for me so I rebuilt it from some reference of the Sony Tower in Japan.

5.Overlaying the lighting render

I basically added the lighting render over the top of the colour image as a second layer. This was then overlay blended to the orginal image which does a lot of the lighting for you. It also produces perfect shadows ! Click here for the full size image.
