Animal Raceway is my latest game done in conjunction with Rob Donkin. I had done Racehorse Tycoon and Gone to the Dogs before and I really fancied doing a new one, but this time do mini games for the training rather than it all being just sim/stats based. We came up with the idea that it was a racetrack with hurdles, this led to there being stats for stamina, reactions, agility and speed, and an overall health stat.It was then just a case of designing 5 mini games to increase those stats to boost your animal in the races.
From an art point of view, we wanted the animals to be a good variety yet we also needed them to be able to perform a lot of different tasks for the mini games. I built one template based round a man, so the animals all became sort of men in suits, which I thought was kind of funny. It was purely for animation purposes really as with 10 different animals and over 17 animations to do it really was going to be a massive job to animate them all individually. Pretty much all character art for this game I drew digitally with a Wacom tablet, it’s the same technique I used on Hambo, which I think comes out quite nicely, more importantly its really quick to knock out and saves time in doing sketches and scanning. The backgrounds I drew late at night while watching TV shows, so there’s a few influences involved, for those I did draw them all on paper before scanning and then basically tracing them with the Wacom.
So how has it gone down ? Pretty well so far, 3.82 on kongregate and the average player is staying involved for 35 mins, which is a huge amount, its third highest play time of any of my games, only Toxers and Golden Robot beat it for playtime and those are massive rpg games. I am really quite surprised as it really is just 5 mini games and a container game and the mini games really aren’t anything special on their own. I think its another case of people liking grinding out games just to get achievements. Its quite incredible what some people will actually play once they are hooked in after the first couple of minutes.
Great game! I learned the hard way that you need your health up. Absolute MOST important stat to have great!!! Very very pleasing…5/5 or 10/10, or 100%!

If you exit to the main menu after spending your money, the amount you have just spent is reimbursed and the stat improvements stay when you load the game again…..just thought I would point out this glitch.

Hey robot jam ive got all the medals and completed premier league and came first but how do you know when ive beat the game?(Animal raceway).
Oh and i have an idea for a new game id like to pitch:(you dont have to use it)
Basically theres a super store and the player is the manager. you have to employ people and make negotiations with several companies to buy their goods. you can upgrade the shop and fire people. the aim is to be in control of the whole town by buying all shops and apartments(rent) and being the richest in town by overcoming your opponents deals. you can also rob banks but be care ful not to be caught by police as it will ruin your reputation.
If like you can improve this idea and make it better. you can also add in mini games.
My inspiration was from stick rpg 2 and Mcdonalds videogame.If u want you can see these games for more ideas. Thanks
Sounds like it could be an interesting game. Only thing is I have several projects on at the moment and not enough time.
I wouldn’t mind making that, its just those sim games become massively complicated, not sure its one I could make without a bigger team of people.
Oh if you have beaten the premier league on animal raceway that’s really where it ends, we just let you keep on playing so you can get all the medals.,

Formula Racer 2012, Harry Quantum 3 and a level pack for basketballs.Those should all be out fairly soon and then I have to make the last part of Synapsis. I’d really like to make another sim game though sometime.

i love this game m now on i like this game it is from now the best game in the world and it is one of my four favorite games and they are mk, fifa, animal raceway, and hercules.
i very enjoyed this game i was always being the first or second a bit being the third but i never been the forth or lesser and my money were 11550 pounds this so much and i think no body got that much of money in animal raceway my stamina was 1000 my reactions was 1000 my health was 100 my speed was 1000 and finely my agillity was 1000
